Why We Procrastinate: Small Business Owners Epidemic
We often behave in ways that we don't really want to, and procrastination is a perfect example.
We know what we need to do, we have the ability and desire to do it, but we still don't do it. Why? The root cause of procrastination is fear. We fear that taking action will lead to pain or a painful experience of some kind. This fear is stored in our unconscious mind, and it automatically prevents us from taking action, even when we consciously want to. Our unconscious mind is also responsible for our habits of mind. Procrastination is often a habitual pattern of thinking. We start to associate the tasks we are avoiding with pain, and our unconscious mind automatically prevents us from taking action. We can break the cycle of procrastination by becoming aware of our associations to pain and pleasure. When we understand why we are afraid of taking action, we can start to re-establish our associations to the tasks we are avoiding.
Here are some tips for dealing with the root cause of procrastination:
- Identify your fears. What are you afraid of when you think about taking action? Once you know what your fears are, you can start to challenge them.
- Reframe your thinking. Instead of associating the tasks you are avoiding with pain, start to associate them with pleasure. Think about the benefits of completing the task and how it will help you achieve your goals.
- Take small steps. Don't try to do too much at once. Start by breaking down the task into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Reward yourself. When you complete a step, reward yourself with something you enjoy. This will help you stay motivated and on track.
Remember, you are ultimately in control with your conscious actions. You can overcome your fears and take action to achieve your goals.
